The North Carolina State Fair: A Place to Come Together When We Need It Most

By Raymond S

In a time when it feels like our country, and sometimes even our own communities, are divided by politics, disagreements, and competing visions for the future, I hope the North Carolina State Fair can remind us of something important: we still have so much in common.

Every fall, people from across North Carolina come to Raleigh for one of our state’s most beloved traditions. They come from small towns and big cities, from the mountains to the coast, bringing different backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences. Yet for a few hours or a whole day, they can share the same fairgrounds, laugh together, make memories, and enjoy the simple pleasures that make life special.

That is part of what makes the State Fair so meaningful. It is more than rides, fried food, livestock exhibits, and agricultural displays. It is a celebration of who we are as North Carolinians.

We know how to come together. We know how to have fun, try great new foods, scream on a roller coaster, cheer on a child at a competition, and marvel at the creativity and hard work of our neighbors. We know how to appreciate a local farmer’s harvest, admire a handmade craft, and discover something new about the state we call home.

At the fair, the person standing next to you in line for a ride may have a different political opinion, come from a different background, or see the world differently. But in that moment, you are both just people waiting for a little excitement. You might strike up a conversation, share a laugh, recommend a food stand, or simply enjoy the same experience. Sometimes, that is a good place to start.

We do not have to agree on everything to treat one another with kindness. We do not have to share the same politics to appreciate a delicious new food, enjoy a beautiful autumn day, or take pride in the talent and traditions found across North Carolina.

The State Fair also gives us a chance to see the best of our state on display. From agricultural achievements and local businesses to North Carolina-made products, family traditions, and the ingenuity of our people, the fair showcases the dedication and creativity that help our communities thrive. It reminds us that our state has so much to offer, and that its greatest strength has always been its people.

Of course, a visit to the fair will not resolve our deepest disagreements or erase the divisions that exist in our society. But perhaps that is asking too much of any single event. What it can do is create opportunities for shared experiences, neighborly conversations, and moments of joy that remind us we are more than our differences.

I hope this year’s North Carolina State Fair can be a place where families make memories, friends reconnect, strangers share a laugh, and people from every corner of our state feel welcome. I hope we can put aside the noise of our daily arguments for a little while and remember what it feels like to enjoy something together.

North Carolinians have always had plenty to celebrate, and we have every reason to be proud of the place we call home. We can come together, have fun, eat great new foods, ride the rides, and discover all the wonderful things North Carolina has to offer.

In a divisive time, we need reminders that unity does not mean uniformity. It means recognizing our shared humanity even when we disagree.

So, as the lights shine over the midway and the smell of fair food fills the autumn air, I hope we see more than a fair. I hope we see a reflection of the North Carolina we want to be: welcoming, generous, curious, and connected.

We may arrive as strangers with different opinions, but we can leave with a smile, a good story, and a renewed appreciation for one another.

That is the magic of the State Fair and a little more of that magic is something North Carolina could use right now.
